Partnership & policy strategy to expand patient access for chronic care medications in Europe

A leading pharmaceutical company was expanding indications for a chronic care medication across Europe. While early efforts focused on traditional brand and indication-specific activities, it became evident that many eligible patients, particularly in less-developed healthcare systems, remained undiagnosed or untreated. Despite broad awareness of chronic disease burden, few countries had the structures or programs needed to systematically identify and manage affected populations.

Experience from this work demonstrated that sustainable access expansion required a fundamental shift in perspective. The company recognized that the goal of improving patient outcomes was shared with governments, payers, healthcare providers, and patient organizations.
By reframing its strategy around system needs rather than product promotion, it became possible to forge multi-stakeholder partnerships focused on early diagnosis, treatment continuity, and capacity building.
