Access readiness review and capability roadmap for an emerging ultra-orphan company
Challenge
An investor held strong confidence in one of its portfolio companies that was about eighteen months away from launching a promising ultra-orphan compound. The plan was to commercialize independently. While experienced commercial and medical affairs leaders had been recruited, it remained unclear how to structure and resource market access effectively. The question was not only about skills, but about where to focus limited organizational energy.
Approach
Experience from comparable situations showed that a structured review of access capabilities and assumptions is essential well before launch. The assessment began with an analysis of product attributes, evidence programs, and pricing and market access expectations. It revealed a disconnect between the achievable value story and the commercial assumptions and uncovered several access-specific challenges typical of ultra-orphan launches that had not yet been considered.
Based on these insights, a roadmap was created to strengthen internal readiness while selectively complementing in-house capacity with external partnerships.
Outcome
The outcome was a pragmatic access strategy that balanced capability building and outsourcing, clarified ownership across functions, and defined tangible work packages for execution. The process itself became a learning exercise, helping the organization focus on doing the right things at the right time.
That is why Access Architecture™ begins with listening.
